About Car Park Gritting
Car park gritting is an essential business service to ensure employees, visitors and all who visit a business premises are protected from slips and falls. Using the service of a car park gritting company will ensure that all public access areas at your business or residential property are gritted to prevent ice forming. Areas such as car parks, pathways, steps, driveways, ramps, forecourts, site entrances and exits, communal areas, picnic areas and so on can be included in a private gritting contract. Gritting is carried out when cold weather is forecast, to prevent snow laying or ice forming. In the UK, car park gritting is generally carried out between the months of October and April. It is highly unlikely temperatures will drop low enough at any other time of the year to require private gritting services.
The Ice Watch Fully Comprehensive Car Park Gritting Service
Ice Watch provides its customers with a fully comprehensive car park gritting service to ensure full compliance with current Health and Safety law.
-
We analyse localised weather forecasts on a daily basis between October and April to ensure that our customers are pro-active in their approach to dealing with icy conditions to avoid, slips, trips and falls. We also monitor conditions for a full twelve months of the year, so if unusual weather is ever predicted, we will contact clients to inform them of the potential risk.
-
Weather reports are provided by WeatherQuest, a highly accurate weather forecasting system.
-
Reports are analysed by our Operations Manager, who makes an informed decision as to whether gritting at each location is required. The decision will be based on the ground temperature being lower than -1c throughout the night and the amount of moisture on the ground. The hours of business for the site are also taken into consideration and if the temperature is anticipated to rise in the hours before the site’s car parks and pathways are to be used then gritting may not be deemed to be necessary.

When conditions require it, we provide as necessary gritting and snow ploughing services.

Car Park Gritting – Other Options?
DIY Gritting / Renting Salt Bins
DIY gritting involves either buying your own salt or renting a salt bin and employing someone to spread it when required. Whilst this may seem like an economical choice, it is a false economy for the following reason. The only way to keep your car parks and pathways safe from ice is by laying the grit before the icy weather. Therefore in order for the grit to be effective your employee would need to be able to accurately check the weather on a daily basis. This may seem like an easy task, but the weather reports that you may find on the Internet or on TV are not as accurate or as highly localised as the reports that Ice Watch use from WeatherQuest. Relying on inaccurate reports could result in the grit not being laid before the icy weather – leading to potential accidents, or wastage of the grit when it is not required.
In addition, if you use Ice Watch's contract services you are also covered under the £10million public liability insurance, which you would not have the benefit of by attempting DIY gritting. |
