Gritting in Brighton

Brighton forms a large part of the city of Brighton and Hove and is situated in the historic county of Sussex. Based on the South coast of Britain, it is a hip and trendy city and it attracts over eight million visitors each year. In 1995, it ranked among the top ten UK destinations for visitors from abroad. Although the south coast of England has one of the warmest climates in the UK, with temperatures in Brighton rarely dropping below 2 degrees centigrade, winters can still be harsh and unpredictable. For instance, the 2010/2011 winter in Brighton saw residents experience the worst weather conditions for 30 years which caused some roads, driveways and pavements to be inaccessible.

Icewatch is primarily a preventative service which works to minimise disruption to Brighton businesses during cold weather and avoid accidents. We monitor highly localised accurate weather reports from WeatherQuest so grit is laid before the icy weather to keep car parks, walkways, side entrances, ramps and pavements clear and keep the public, customers and your workforce safe. Our highly accurate weather monitoring system means we only lay grit when necessary, which avoids waste and ensures our gritting service is cost effective and environmentally friendly. We use all the latest salt spreading equipment and the amount of de-icing salt is carefully controlled for optimum spreading each time.

Our comprehensive gritting service is used by a wide range of organisations including schools and colleges, industrial estates, hospitals and medical centres, local authorities, property management companies, car park management companies, utility companies, private homes, retail premises and parks. We also offer a snow ploughing and clearing service should any heavy snowfall occur.

About Brighton

Sometimes called London-by-the-sea, Brighton is one of the UK's top ten cities. It is seen as a major centre for heritage and culture and is also one of the UK's leading nightlife hotspots with many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. With its narrow alleyways, The Lanes is a popular area near the seafront and where many pubs, shops and restaurants can be found. North of the Lanes is the area called North Laine, which has a number of cafés, bars, museums and theatres. Brighton Festival, the UK's largest arts festival takes place in Brighton in May and Brighton Fringe Festival, which is the second largest fringe festival in the world runs alongside it.

Brighton was originally a fishing village (the lanes follows the street pattern of the original fishing village). After the arrival of the railway in 1841, it attracted day-trippers from London and saw a surge in population growth. Today a large number of businesses in Brighton are involved in media, in particular digital or new media. The largest private employer is American Express and there are around 7,500 people employed in jobs related to the tourism or to the tourism industry. A train journey to London takes less than one hour, so many residents commute to work in The Capital.

Brighton and Hove was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II as part of the millennium celebrations. Well known landmarks include the Royal Pavilion, a former palace built for Prince Regent, the Marine Palace and Pier and the Grand Hotel. Brighton has two universities and a medical school.
