Why is it better to grit in advance of bad weather ?
It is extremely important that gritting is used as a preventative method to avoid ice forming as it can not be used as a reactive solution to icy weather. Water freezes at 0c. When gritting is carried out the salt molecules connect with the water molecules, which make it more difficult to ice to form. The result of this is that a solution is formed that has a much lower freezing point than water. Therefore once ice has already formed, the grit would simply sit on top of the ice and the salt molecules would not be able to connect with the water molecules to form the solution with the lower freezing point.
When is gritting carried out to prevent ice forming?
Gritting is usually required if ground temperature throughout the night is forecast to drop below -1c and there is sufficient moisture around. This may not be the case however if temperatures are anticipated to rise before the site will be in use. Ice Watch's Operations Manager will analyse our highly localised weather reports for your site on a daily basis between October and April and inform you when gritting is required.
Gritters will visit your site while the areas are out of use, typically from 7pm onwards but always before ice and frost have formed.
When is snow removal carried out?
Snow removal is often not required as our winter gritting service will help to stop snow settling.
However after heavy snowfall of more than 5cms, we can visit your site with our snow ploughs and clear car parks and pedestrian areas at your request.
As snowfall is much less predictable than the formation of ice, to some degree we rely on customers to inform us when snow removal is required.
It is advisable that a site be reviewed daily whilst snow is falling to decide whether snow removal is required.
How is snow removal carried out?
Snow removal is carried out with either pedestrian snow blades for small pathways and mechanical snow ploughs for larger areas such as private roads and car parks. All areas of your premises can be cleared using one or other of these machines.
Where is snow deposited?
The snow is removed to a safe area as discussed with and agreed upon with the client. It must not be left in a place where it could melt and run down onto areas where ice forming could be a hazard.
What types of commercial premises do Ice Watch work with?
We provide snow removal and gritting services to all types of commercial premises including medical centres, hospital and doctor's surgeries, schools and colleges, hospitals, local authority buildings, offices and business parks, shops, car parks and industrial estates.
Are services provided on a contract only basis?
Clients will receive maximum benefit if they take out our comprehensive contact service. This is proactive rather than reactive, ensuring sites are adequately prepared prior to winter weather descending. |
