The sun shines

17th July, 2014

You can always tell when a heatwave is on the way in this country because the newspapers insist on comparing the forthcoming temperatures to traditionally more tropical destinations around the world. With the mercury slowly rising throughout this week, the media have wasted no time in letting the rest of the world know what they are missing out on. The Daily Mail and Daily Express claim that Britain will be warmer than Barbados, we will be hotter than Gran Canaria if you believe Yahoo, while Sky have said temperatures will top those in Ibiza.

Now whilst we are never going to turn our noses up at a little bit of sunny weather, it is temperatures at the other end of the scale that are never far from our minds. Winter may be several months away but we are already assisting our clients with preparations for whatever weather Mother Nature may throw at us this winter.

It goes without saying that once the glorious summer sunshine disappears for another year and snow, ice and freezing temperatures set in, the risk of slipping or falling greatly increases. By allowing your staff and customers to use your car park you have a responsibility to ensure that, to the best of your ability, it is safe for them to use.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states "Employers have to ensure that their employees and anyone else who could be affected by their work (such as visitors, members of the public, patients etc) are kept safe from harm and that their health is not affected. This means slip and trip risks must be controlled to ensure people do not trip or fall."

If you think your car park and walkways are too slippery you are required to either take action or close them. For many businesses, closing their car park is simply out of the question; so it pays to put a plan in place for dealing with snow clearance and gritting. At Ice Watch we can provide an initial site risk assessment to help you establish the most effective approach to maintaining your site during the winter, and provide an effective and efficient gritting service once the cold weather arrives.

To arrange a meeting where we can discuss putting a winter plan in place for your business, do not hesitate to get in touch. In the meantime we are off to find an ice cream van!
