Odds good for White Christmas

15th November, 2016

With the John Lewis and Marks & Spencer’s TV ads now being aired, we can (un)officially say that the festive season is in full swing! And, with snow having already fallen in many parts of the country last week - snowploughs and gritters were needed to re-open Leeds Bradford airport - we thought we’d look at the latest odds for a White Christmas.

The definition that the Met Office uses to define a White Christmas is for one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December. Traditionally, it uses a single location in the country to define a White Christmas which is the Met Office building in London.

However, with the increase in betting on a White Christmas, the number of locations have increased and can now include sites such as Buckingham Palace, Belfast (Aldergrove Airport), Aberdeen (Pittodrie, Aberdeen FC), Edinburgh (Castle), Coronation Street in Manchester and the Principality Stadium in Cardiff!

Last week’s snowfall prompted William Hill to cut the odds on a White Christmas to 3/1 for cities in Scotland, namely Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Belfast, Leeds, London, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle have odds of 5/1.

Birmingham, Penzance, Bristol, Cardiff and Norwich have odds of 7/1.

Exacta Weather’s James Madden has predicted “…very potent or potentially memorable periods of cold and snow throughout December and January,” and the Met Office’s Grahame Madge observed, "The current signs suggest that the start of winter is likely to be cooler and drier than last winter."

Though White Christmases are historically quite common in Scotland, Britain as a whole is more likely to get snowfall in January. For most parts of the UK, Christmas marks the beginning of the period when it's likely to snow. We are more likely to see snow between January and March with snow or sleet falling an average 3.9 days in December, compared to 5.3 days in January, 5.6 days in February and 4.2 days in March.

So, with the prospect of a colder, winter weather on the way it’s time to plan for your winter gritting and snow clearing. Act now so that everything is in place for when the snow and ice appear. Call us today on 01728 633900 for a quote tailored to your needs.
