Try not to get caught out by unseasonable April showers

25th April, 2017

We are used to April showers in this country but maybe not the wintry ones we are experiencing this week.

From dry April to snowy April
An April shower is typically regarded as a heavy downfall during the month which is a result of the position of the jet stream. In early spring, the jet stream starts to move northwards, allowing large depressions to bring strong winds and rain in from the Atlantic.

But having enjoyed one of the driest Aprils on record, this week we are seeing a new twist to the April shower seeing snow showers instead of rain downpours.

Freezing driving conditions
Freezing temperatures and snow are set to hit Britain with a record late April cold snap this week. Thermometers are due to dip to an incredible minus 7 degrees during the early hours of Thursday beating the minus 6 degrees record low for 27 April set in Moray, Scotland, in 1956.

Heavy snow is forecast in Scotland with sleet and hail on the cards as far south as the Midlands, Wales and London. Winter conditions will grip the country bringing potential transport chaos to many. Even day temperatures will struggle to get much above single figures across the country by the middle of the week.

Snow quite common in April
Several parts of Scotland have already experienced April snow showers and the Met Office issued a yellow warning for Monday night and Tuesday morning. But we shouldn’t be too surprised because the BBC Scotland Weather team tweeted: "Based on records from 1981 to 2010 the UK average is for just over 2 days of snow in April”.

Whilst regions in the north will see the greatest risk of snow, there will be significant snow risk across many parts of the country, even as far south as London. Widespread frosts are also likely under clearer skies and chilly northerly winds.

The Met Office said Britain will feel bitterly cold until the end of the week.
